CDOT Extends Glenwood Bridge Comment Period

If you have an opinion about the new Grand Avenue Bridge, now there’s another month to let officials know. The Colorado Department of Transportation has extended the comment period for the Glenwood Springs project.

CDOT has gotten a lot of feedback already about the proposal...specifically the Environmental Assessment released at the beginning of the month. Spokeswoman Tracy Truelove says at a recent public hearing, some people were asking for more time to consider the bridge replacement.

“One in particular came from the Mayor of the City, Leo McKinney, and in looking at it further, we figured we’d really like to collaborate and work with that group, because they’re very vested in the project.”

That’s the City of Glenwood Springs. Trulove says comments so far have been equally critical and in favor of the project. The comment deadline is now December 31st.

Glenwood Springs Eagles Welcome All for Thanksgiving

For those without a place to go this Thanksgiving, the Eagles Club in Glenwood Springs is opening its doors. Every year the club hosts a free Thanksgiving dinner that attracts hundreds of people.

This year the Eagles Club is preparing 35 turkeys, 200 pounds of potatoes, 80 pounds of dressing and more than 95 pumpkin pies. The charitable organization started the dinner three decades ago...with just one turkey.

The food is donated and the dinner is held at the Eagles’ clubhouse downtown. Deliveries are made to those stuck at home. Dawn Hayes is an organizer.

“It is aimed at both people in need or people who are alone for the holidays. You don’t have to be homeless or in dire need to come and join us at our dinner table. If you’re alone and want to spend time and socialize with people for the holidays, come on down.”

She’s expecting between 400 and 600 people. The doors open at 10 o’clock on Thanksgiving morning.

Colorado Jobs Numbers Released

There were more people working during the second quarter this year than previously thought. That's according to new job numbers released by the Colorado department of labor and employment. Each quarter the agency compares estimated job levels with actual employment. After double checking jobs held in April, May, and August, officials say there were big jumps in workers in the trade, transportation, and utilities sectors. In the flip side, there were fewer hospitality jobs than expected.

Lecture Series Targets Kids and Climate Change

The Aspen Skiing Company is hosting a lecture series in downtown Aspen this winter. The first is tonight, and an organization focused on kids and climate change will be the focus.

The nonprofit is called Our Children’s Trust. Based in Oregon, they’re trying to combat rising sea levels and unusual weather by working with younger generations. Lou Helmuth is Program Advisor. He says the group is trying to change how government officials think about the atmosphere.

“We know what the health condition of an atmosphere is, and we know that we are beyond that healthy condition. So what do we need to do, our own governmental operations, to bring us to a point of atmospheric health?”

The series starts tonight at the Limelight Hotel in Aspen.

AVH Earns “Gold” for LEED

Aspen Valley Hospital received a LEED “gold” certification for its new hospital construction. The designation is awarded to buildings that are leaders in energy and environmental design.

The parts of the hospital that earned the recognition include a new inpatient unit, the oncology and rehabilitation areas and medical office space. The addition opened in 2012.

It’s rare for a healthcare facility to earn LEED “gold.” In a statement hospital officials said only one other hospital in Colorado has achieved such recognition.

Snowmass Opens Tomorrow

Snowmass is the next ski resort to open in the Roaring Fork Valley. It’s opening more than 500 acres to skiing and riding tomorrow including terrain like The Burn, Sam’s Knob and Upper Campground. Six lifts will operate and a rail jam competition called “Thanksjibbing” will start at 2pm at Base Village.

Aspen Mountain opened Saturday but additional terrain will open tomorrow. Sunlight Mountain Resort is scheduled to open earlier than planned on Friday. Aspen Highlands and Buttermilk will open on December 13th.
