Aspen's First Retail Marijuana Store Prepares to Open

Silverpeak Apothecary will be Aspen's first retail marijuana store when it opens later this month.

Aspen’s first retail marijuana shop plans to open this month. Silverpeak Apothecary has been working on getting approvals from the City and Pitkin County. The business currently operates as a medical marijuana dispensary but, it’s tripling in size to meet the needs of a budding industry. Aspen Public Radio’s Marci Krivonen reports.

"Good morning, what can we do for you? No, we’re not recreational yet. We’re hoping for early to mid-March," she says to the caller.

How Will Recreational Marijuana Impact Local Teenagers?

Last week the Aspen School District and the group Project 18 held a panel discussion on teenagers and marijuana. The legalization of recreational pot has many parents concerned.

Now that recreational marijuana is legal for adults 21 and older, some parents of young kids are concerned. Law enforcement and school officials say legalization has led many kids to see marijuana as benign.  Some parents also fear with legal pot now for sale, it will be easier for their kids to get. Aspen Public Radio's Marci Krivonen reports.

Parent Jillian Livingston’s son is preparing to enter high school next year.

"I feel like there’s a lot of questions. I feel like he is in the middle of this new evolution and I think that we have to be educated," she said.

Marijuana Greenhouse Breaks Ground near Basalt

The owner and partners of the medical marijuana dispensary Silver Peak Apothecary posed for a picture last week. The business is building a greenhouse in the Mid-valley. They hope to add retail pot to their offerings.

Construction equipment is moving dirt in the Mid-Valley in preparation for a marijuana grow site. The medical marijuana business Silverpeak Apothecary is constructing a 25,000 foot greenhouse to supply both medical and retail marijuana to its storefront in Aspen. As Aspen Public Radio’s Marci Krivonen reports, the owners broke ground Friday despite complaints from neighbors.

State sends down rules, regulations for marijuana retailers

Starting in January, recreational users in Colorado will be able to purchase marijuana from retailers.

Recreational pot users now know what to expect when marijuana retailers open their doors in 2014. Yesterday, Colorado state officials released details regarding the rules and regulations marijuana retailers must follow. Aspen Public Radio’s Rebecca Kruth reports.  

Right now, it’s legal to grow and possess certain amounts of pot for recreational use, but you’re not going to find it on the shelves of your corner convenience store quite yet.
