Torin Yater-Wallace in first round of X Games invites

Nov 17, 2015

Valley native Torin Yater-Wallace was included in the first wave of athlete invites to X Games Aspen 2016, to be held at Buttermilk Mountain from Jan. 28 through Jan. 31.

Yater-Wallace, who’s been skiing since he was a toddler, gained notoriety when he won a silver medal in the superpipe at his X Games debut in 2011 — when he was just 15 years old. He’s since won two gold medals at Winter X Games Europe, represented the United States in the Sochi Olympics and won multiple world cup events in the halfpipe.

Mountain Edition - November 13th, 2014

Nov 13, 2014

Good afternoon and welcome to Mountain Edition. Wintry weather descends on the Roaring Fork Valley this week closing Independence Pass and prompting locals to break out their cold weather gear. Two Roaring Fork Valley residents are renamed to the U.S. Ski Team. Aspen holds its annual Veterans Day service. The Forest Service highlights crowds over-loving backcountry spots, big employers move forward with a plan to make their workers healthier, and politicians in Denver put their ducks in a row after a surprising election.

Heading Home from Sochi

So we hopped the train to explore Khosta, a small town between Sochi and Adler.  Piece of cake way to travel, and it was almost empty.  We got there about dusk and watched as it got dark over the Black Sea.  Then we found this great little shack called the Beerline where they serve homemade brews and horrible looking dried fish, which only one of us was brave enough to try.

Aspen athlete and Nordic skier Noah Hoffman competed yesterday in the last day of the Winter Olympics in Sochi, Russia. The US Ski Team praised Hoffman’s performance in the taxing 50 kilometer race. Afterwards, Hoffman told NBC News he felt good about how the event went.  As the crowd cheered in the background, Hoffman explained he’s focused on the 2018 Winter Olympics in South Korea: “This is definitely a step in the right direction for me, and looking forward to progress in the World Cup Circuit and coming back in four years and winning a medal here.”

Sun, Sport and Moving Fast in Sochi

Ok, it did get sunny again.  Yay.

We did Snowboard Parallel GS yesterday.  Not much to report on that, so I’m going to go onto today’s coverage of Men’s Ski Cross.  By the way, I’m now on course, which is fun to get into competition camera.

Variety is the spice of life, and I’m moving all over the place!

What a fantastic event.  Absolutely the best spectator sport ever.  And the athleticism is amazing.  Anything can happen in this gladiator-like competition to the finish, and I hope you’ll all get this in time to tune in to watch it tonight.

Sim had a day off so we wandered the streets of Rosa Khutor, Krasnaya Polyana and Esta Sudoku. In spite of the masses of people roaming the streets, which are closed off to all cars, the streets are immaculate with constant street cleaners who walk about with little brooms and dust pans.

So for Boarder/Ski Cross, I am now in the bleachers, shooting friends and family and crowd. Everybody's changing up for variety¹s sake.  The super slo-mo I was doing was fun because it was such a challenge, but I think I’ll welcome the change because there will be a lot less stress with this assignment. With the former, I frankly cringed each time the replays began rolling, as that’s when the focus failures were accentuated.  90% of the time, mine worked.

Trading pins is big business in Russia. Pretty sure mafia controlled. They love Al. We can't get more than 2 minutes through Olympic Park without being stopped for a trade or to get their picture taken with him… or both. Give him a few more weeks in Russia and he's sure he'll be fluent.

2/12 - Alrighty.  Sorry for the hiatus.  Been busy working hard at day, and celebrating jobs well done at night.

We’re about half way through, and still on Slopestyle.  I’m really looking forward to Ski/Snowboard Cross as that will change things up quite a bit.  And it’s a really exciting sport.  Don’t know my position yet, but I’ll keep you posted.

“Hot. Cool. Yours” – the slogan for Sochi 2014. I wasn't getting the slogan that is on every bus (English on one side, Russian on the other), flag, sign, building, until I was immersed long enough into the Russian culture.
