Interview: Paula and Jim Crown

  In October, The Aspen Skiing Company was one of ten companies to receive an award from American for the Arts.  The awards went to the 10 "Best Businesses Partnering with the Arts in America."  Among them were Bacardi, Turner Broadcasting and Microsoft.  The inspiration behind this commitment to art comes in large part from Paula and Jim Crown, Managing Partners of the Aspen Skiing Company.  Paula Crown also is an artist.  They spoke with APR’s Roger Adams. 

A showcase of women artists in Basalt

This weekend, three women artists will have their work exhibited in Basalt. The pieces range in style from tranquil landscapes to bold abstracts. The artists are Dinah Worman, Betsy Chaffin and Cathy Schermer. Tomorrow (Fri., 7-12-2013), three of Basalt’s art venues will host their openings. Aspen Public Radio’s Rebecca Kruth got a preview of each collection

Painting the Soul

For the past few days an elderly man has been painting a series of small and large watercolors of the Roaring Fork River and scenes of the valley.  The paintings include a number that were first sketched in a small airplane as it circled around the Maroon Bells and above Independence Pass.  The painter is Don Nice and tomorrow in Basalt a showing of his work will go up in the Ann Korologos Gallery.  Aspen Public Radio’s Roger Adams spoke with Nice about his work and prepared this report.

Memorial Day weekend brought luscious green views for drivers along Independence Pass. And there was an extra dash of color along Highway 82. Less than ten miles east of Aspen, large yarn creations appeared in a grove of Aspen trees.... looking like giant socks or leg warmers, wrapped around the tree trunks.

On Monday, two women were among several who pulled over to look more closely.

“At first we were really confused about what they were because we had never seen them before. But we knew we had to stop and check them out.”

Surls Museum It Is

A museum for the sculpture of artist James Surls has been approved for Carbondale’s old library building.  Last night the Carbondale Town Council voted to convert the Gordon Cooper Library building into a museum and gallery.  Aspen Public Radio’s Roger Adams reports.
