  State Representative Millie Hamner is getting ready to take on a big job. Starting in November, she’s overseeing a committee that puts together Colorado’s budget. Hamner spoke with Aspen Public Radio’s Elise Thatcher while on a recent listening tour. A hot topic was the Taxpayer’s Bill of Rights, or TABOR. The state constitutional amendment limits how taxes are collected in Colorado.

Pitkin County is fighting a national effort to transfer federal public lands to states. The county plans to send a resolution to congressional representatives in Washington DC. 

One group advocating for state control of federal public lands is the American Lands Council. It argues state control would improve access, environmental health and productivity on land managed by the Forest Service and Bureau of Land Management.

Lawmakers are meeting in Denver, as the legislative session ramps up. Already, bills targeting wildfire mitigation and renewable energy have been introduced. Senator Gail Schwartz of Snowmass Village is working on a number of bills during her last term in office. One aims to bring broadband internet access to remote and rural areas. The democrat is termed out after this year. Aspen Public Radio’s Marci Krivonen sat down with her on Monday.
