Carbondale police chief Gene Schilling acknowledged the town has seen a “spat of serious crime” over the past few years. There was a homicide and several armed robberies.

In mid-February, two men allegedly robbed the Cowen Convenience store in Carbondale at gunpoint. They were arrested days later and have been in Garfield County Jail since.

Law enforcement agencies and elected officials up and down the valley are looking at alternative ways to combat mental illness issues that are becoming public safety concerns.
