Glenwood Canyon mitigation project is complete

Sep 8, 2016
Colorado Department of Transportation

The Colorado Department of Transportation announced yesterday that the four month rockfall mitigation project in Glenwood Canyon is officially complete.

Hubbard Cave outside of Glenwood has been closed to humans since 2010, and officials with the White River National Forest are proposing keeping it this way for the next three years. The move is an effort to prevent White Nose Syndrome, which has killed more than 6 million bats in the eastern United States.

Glenwood Canyon to close for rockwall work

May 5, 2016

The permanent rockfall mitigation project in Glenwood Canyon will cause 30-minute delays for traffic in both directions May 10, 11 and 12, according to the Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT).

This project, which is classified as an emergency, comes after the February rock slide when the canyon was closed for several days. CDOT anticipates finishing the project by Sept. 1.

The popular trail that leads to Hanging Lake in the Glenwood Canyon will be closed one or two days in May, June and September while the Eagle-Holy Cross Ranger District does maintenance aimed at protecting habitats along the trail. The dates the trail will be closed are May 25-26, June 13-14 and Sept. 10.

Maintenance for the trail includes moving large rocks, painting bridges, removing graffiti, adding new rock steps and creating a barrier system for protecting habitats.

Glenwood Canyon on track to open in early May

Mar 24, 2016
Barbara Platts

Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT) officials said they are on schedule to open all lanes in Glenwood Canyon the first week of May and the highway shouldn’t fully shut down again in the meantime.

February was a rough month for tourism in the Aspen area. Little snow, high winds and an airport equipment problem made the Upper Valley less enticing and a lot harder to get to. But the real kicker was the long closure on I-70 in Glenwood Canyon.

Traffic will likely be affected dramatically today. Crews are working in Glenwood Canyon and taking down the Grand Avenue pedestrian bridge.
