Aspen & Pitkin County: Buy New Holiday Lights, Give Us Your Old Ones

If you’ve had your holiday lights for a while… especially if that’s more than a couple of years  … Pitkin County and the City of Aspen are hoping you’ll consider buying new, more energy efficient lights to put up over the coming weeks. It’s part of an effort to lower energy use in the Aspen area… and make some cash, too. APR’s Elise Thatcher has more.

Carbondale Energy Conference Tackles Funding, Opportunities

Colorado is more energy efficient than any of its neighboring states… and it’s one of the most efficient in the Intermountain West. But federal money is running out for some programs, and organizations across the state are looking for new ways to fund initiatives they say are making a difference. That was one theme at a conference in Carbondale on Wednesday, November 13th.

Gypsum Biomass Plant First of its Kind in the State

A new power plant in Gypsum will use wood chippings to generate electricity.

Colorado’s first woody biomass power plant is nearly complete. Senator Mark Udall and State Senator Gail Schwartz toured the facility in Gypsum on Friday, where wood cuttings from beetle kill trees will be turned into electricity. Aspen Public Radio’s Marci Krivonen explains.

Heavy machinery is moving dirt around at a construction site not far from Interstate 70. The area used to be grazed by cows. Now, it’s being transformed into an industrial site, complete with two smokestacks and metal ramps surrounding a tall, main building.

Coal Mines Provide Enticing Green Energy Source

One local company is already taking advantage of methane capture at coal mines. The Aspen Skiing Company last year, invested in a project that generates energy from methane at a mine near Paonia.  Their trailblazing will set the stage for other groups to try out similar projects. Aspen Public Radio’s Ellis Robinson reports.
