How To Watch Aspen's Four Athletes During Winter Olympics

Figure skater Jeremy Abbott, 28, began skating at the Aspen Ice Garden when he was two years old. Later, his family moved to Colorado Springs so he could train. This season is the four-time national champion’s last. In January, he set a record high score at the U.S. Championships in Boston. This will be Abbott’s second time at an Olympics. He told Aspen Public Radio in December that his broad range of abilities gives him an edge.

Road to Sochi: Locals Traveling To Olympics Not "Overly" Concerned About Safety

Aspen-area athletes and their family members are focusing on competition rather than worrying about safety. Sochi has been the target of terrorist threats and, bombings in a town hundreds of miles away in December raised fears.

The four Aspen-area athletes competing in the Winter Olympics arrive in Russia this week as the country prepares for opening ceremonies on Friday. Security in Sochi has been closely scrutinized after two suicide bombings killed 34 people in another Russian town in late December. And, the U.S. State Department issued a travel advisory last month for Americans traveling to the Games. Still, a spokesman for the International Olympic Committee says security is being handled well by Russian authorities. For local athletes and family members traveling to Russia, safety is something they’re thinking about. Aspen Public Radio's Marci Krivonen reports.

Aspen Sends Four Athletes To The Olympics in Sochi

Aspen’s sending four athletes to the Olympics in Sochi, Russia and the community gathered Wednesday, to send them off. Aspen Public Radio’s Marci Krivonen was at the event at the Gondola Plaza. She filed this report.

"Welcome to our 2014 Sochi Winter Olympic send-off for our local Olympians!"

Chris Klug, a three-time Olympian, hosted the ceremony. A sizable crowd gathered under light snow while Klug introduced the four Olympic athletes.

"We extend sincere congratulations to Jeremy Abbott, Simi Hamilton, Noah Hoffman and Torin Yater-Wallace," he said.
