Carbondale Company Protests Russia's Anti-Gay Laws

A small furniture design store in Carbondale designed a t-shirt protesting Russia's new anti-gay laws. The store's owners hope local Olympic athletes purchase them.

As winter sports athletes prepare for the Olympics in Sochi, attention is being focused on Russia’s new anti-gay laws, enacted earlier this year.  While some activists are calling for a boycott of Sochi, others hope to draw attention to the discriminatory law.  A small furniture design company in Carbondale has come up with a creative way to get its point across. Aspen Public Radio's Marci Krivonen reports.

New Castle Ski Racer Alice McKennis Overcomes Severe Injury for a Chance at Olympic Games

Ski racer Alice McKennis is overcoming a severe leg injury and training for the U.S. Olympic team.

The 2014 Winter Olympics are less than two months away and local athletes are preparing. Ski racer Alice McKennis has a good shot at making Team USA if she can overcome a serious injury. Earlier this year the New Castle native crashed at a race in Germany. Late last month in Copper, she made some serious headway. Aspen Public Radio’s Marci Krivonen reports.

On a recent cold day in Copper, ski racer Alice McKennis suits up. She buckles her boots, puts on a back protector and dons a tight-fitting speed suit.

Road to Sochi: Freeskier Alex Ferreira Hopes to Make Team USA

Nineteen year old Alex Ferreira is a freeskier from Aspen. He's hoping to compete in the Ski Halfpipe discipline in the 2014 Winter Olympics.

Aspen native Alex Ferreira was asked to be on the U.S. Ski Team before he graduated high school. The 19-year-old freeskier competes in the halfpipe and the 2014 Olympics would be his first. Right now, he’s splitting his time between training, competing and studying. He’s enrolled in college in Utah, and he says it keeps his life balanced. Aspen Public Radio's Marci Krivonen reports.

Road to Sochi: Carbondale Freeskier Meg Olenick Follows in Family's Footsteps

Carbondale native Meg Olenick competes in Ski Slopestyle, a series of jumps and rails. The discipline will make its Olympic debut in Sochi, Russia.

Twenty-five year-old Meg Olenick  grew up skiing in Aspen, trailing her two older brothers. When they started doing tricks at the terrain park, Olenick followed suit. Soon, she was competing in slopestyle skiing around the world. The discipline is new to the Winter Olympics in 2014 and Olenick wants to be part of history in the making. Aspen Public Radio's Marci Krivonen reports.
