Garfield County Commissioners are willing to take legal action to prevent oil and gas trucks from using a popular road near Glenwood Springs. Commissioners and other officials are reacting to news there may be drilling on the controversial Thompson Divide. At Monday’s meeting, the GarCo leaders said the County will try to convince the Forest Service to bar drilling companies from using Four Mile Road, which leads to Sunlight Mountain Resort.

  The Town of Basalt has hired a financial firm to find out how much money a developer could make near downtown. The proposed redevelopment is controversial, and officials have been hashing out what would be a good fit.  Basalt is now working with a Minnesota firm on reviewing four different redevelopment options.

  An Aspen retail marijuana shop was robbed on Tuesday. As of that night, the man is still at large. At 12:30pm Tuesday, a twenty something year old man stole marijuana from a store downtown called Stash. Owner Garrett Patrick calculates more than 400 grams were stolen, but declines to say what the value is.

  Aspen’s High School has a new principal.  45-year-old Tharyn Mulberry has been described as dramatically improving academics at the Pueblo high school where he’s principal now. Mulberry says he’s inspired to continue the already high achievement in Aspen.

  Starting today, there’s roadwork on Highway 82, either on Main Street in Aspen or between the roundabout and the airport. It’s a paving project during Aspen’s busiest month for car traffic at the entrance to the resort community. This July there’s an average of 27,000 cars coming in or out of town each day

  Aspen's School District may choose a final candidate for high school principal today. There are three candidates left. All were grilled Monday by more than 30 parents, teachers, students and board members.

Officials in the mid valley are continuing to look at a major development proposal near Whole Foods. The controversial Tree Farm plan could mean as many as 400 hundred residential units and more than a 130,000 square feet in commercial development. But if the property was a few football field lengths to the southeast, it would go through a whole different set of requirements.

 

Glenwood Springs is looking at charging locals who rent out their homes with Airbnb. City officials are considering requiring a business license and a permit, which adds up to more than $150.
