Hickenlooper: Floods, Fires, School Shootings Are "Not Our Story"

Governor Hickenlooper delivered his State of the State address on Thursday. He said the state is "strong" after floods, fires and a school shooting in 2013.

Governor Hickenlooper delivered his annual State of the State address at the Capitol in Denver Thursday. He said 2013’s wildfires and floods were devastating, but the state is recovering.

"This past year, Colorado has been scorched, Colorado has been flooded, Colorado, once again, endured senseless and inexplicable violence. Yet, despite all of it, we did not let that define us. That is not our story."

Hey Now, What's That Sound?

  Next week, the Aspen Brewing Company goes on trial for breaking the city’s noise ordinance.  The business was issued citations for having music and general bar sounds that were too loud at the property line of a neighboring penthouse condominium.  The residents there had called police complaining about the noise last August.  APR's Roger Adams reports.

  Aspen has clear rules regarding sound levels.  Enforcement of these rules is handled by Aspen’s Environmental Health Department.

“We are sort of the keepers of the city’s noise ordinance.”

Plan Looks at Future Oil, Gas Development on White River National Forest

The White River National Forests hopes to release a final oil and gas plan in late spring/early summer. The plan focuses on future leasing on the Forest.

The White River National Forest is working toward the final stages of updating its oil and gas plan. The document sets out rules for the energy industry, like where and when they can operate on the Forest. And, it could impact what happens in the Thompson Divide. The agency is updating the old plan partly because oil and gas operations have advanced in the area. Aspen Public Radio’s Marci Krivonen reports.

Who and What To Believe?

I spend a lot of time trying to keep myself informed about current political affairs, but it often seems to be a futile effort.  The same subject can be reported with wildly divergent information in competing publications.  What is the poor reader to do?  And how is the public to make any sense of this?
