Contenders have thrown their hats into the ring for local elections in Basalt and Carbondale. More people than usual are running in Basalt, even though there’s a routine number of posts up for grabs on Town Council.

Three seats and the mayor’s office in Basalt will be on the spring ballot. “We have ten people,” says Town Clerk Pam Schilling of the number of contenders, “two of whom are running for mayor and the remaining eight running for council.” All terms are four years, and Schilling must verify signatures before it’s absolutely clear who will be on the ballot in April. Voters will also likely consider a tax increase to buy the contentious Pan and Fork property.

Eight people are running for the Town Trustees Board in Carbondale, which is an average number of candidates. Three trustee seats are open.
