Chicano Batman swoops into Aspen with new resistance record

Josue Rivas

The Los Angeles based Latin alternative band Chicano Batman is coming to Belly Up-Aspen Saturday.

Chicano Batman released their politically-charged third record Freedom is Free, back in March on ATO Records. The band began writing the album back in 2015.

Guitarist Carlos Arévalo said writing this record was as simple as documenting what the band considers injustice as they saw it. For instance, he  talks about the militarization of the police state.

“We just felt like it was our duty as musicians to kind of document what was happening and just tell our story," he said.

Arévalo said the new album’s title track “Freedom is Free” is a flip on the slogan “Freedom is Not Free,” popular during the Iraq War under former President George W. Bush’s second administration.

“It was used as kind of a justification to gain support for the invasion in Iraq," he explained. "We just feel that there doesn’t have to be war paint and blood shed to justify the beauties of freedom.”

Chicano Batman are bringing their resistance to Belly Up, Aspen Saturday night. Denver rock band The Velveteers are slated to open. The show starts at 9:30 p.m. For more details, visit bellyupaspen.com.
