Garfield County weighs changes for tiny homes

Flickr user, Tomas Quinones

Garfield County officials are deliberating on what sized homes they’re willing to allow.

The county’s minimum size for a home right now is 20 x 20 ft. In the past, this has been used  to cut down on the number of trailer parks, to keep property and home values as high as possible.

The county is short on housing, however, and staff is recommending the commissioners strike the minimum size requirement from the county’s Land Use and Development Code. This, they said, will allow for “more creative options for housing.”

Tiny homes can be maintained at a fraction of what an average house would cost. Typically, they’re much cheaper to build. Commissioners meet Monday to discuss the issue.
