Hopes for a swifter I-70

Multiple agencies are coming together to keep traffic moving on the I-70 corridor this winter.

The Colorado Department of Transportation, State Patrol, I-70 coalition and Colorado Motor Carriers held a joint press conference Thursday announcing a myriad of  programs to keep drivers safe and traffic flowing along I-70 this winter.

"We really are putting the kitchen sink into how to continue to operate the I-70 mountain corridor and make it move as smoothly as we can" said CDOT's Amy Ford.

The biggest change this season is the creation of an express lane on the weekends and Monday holidays. The eastbound shoulder will be used for motorists willing to pay for a quicker trip down from the mountains. Also, there will increased enforcement of the Traction Law require snow-compliant tires, and reduced-cost snow tires available to drivers. Both programs are meant to cut down on accidents that block the interstate. Drivers who require assistance from the State Patrol due to slide-offs will be fined if they are found to be without traction-tires when the chain law is in effect.
