Hour delays at Aspen roundabout

Motorists should expect delays up to an hour at the Aspen Roundabout next Tuesday, May 24.

A harsh winter left the state-owned roundabout spotted with potholes. The Colorado Department of Transportation is responding to a request from the city of Aspen to resurface the road.

Beginning at 7 a.m., delays of 20 minutes can be expected. By 11 a.m. those delays will be up to an hour long. At this point in the season about 18,000 cars travel through the roundabout each day.

CDOT is recommending commuters use McLain Flats and Cemetery Lane as a bypass route.

The Roaring Fork Transportation Authority has not finalized its transportation plan for local buses that travel through the roundabout, to the hospital and to the Aspen School District campus.

CDOT’s Tracy Trulove said the height of the delays will happen mid-day when traffic is halted as new asphalt is being laid down. CDOT is working with Aspen Valley Hospital to allow emergency crews through at that time if the need arises.
