Liz Larner’s geo-centric sculptures at the Aspen Art Museum

Liz Larner is a sculptor from California. She works with everything from steel and wood to clay. Some of her ceramic works are currently on display at the Aspen Art Museum. They are rolled slabs that might have cracks or bends.

Highlights of their conversation…

On using different media…

“The first one I did was maple, because I didn’t want to commit to steel without a model or prototype. But that ended up being so different even though they had the same form. Every time it’s different. That was a whole next experience.”

Using rocks from Colorado…

“The Colorado School of Mines put together a list of stones that could survive. I didn’t intend to have the Colorado ones here, but that is kind of what happened. The studios happened to be next to each other...Heidi (Zuckerman, CEO of the Aspen Art Museum) didn’t know about it either, and it just kind of followed from that…”
