The Aspen Police officer who came under fire last month for aggressively arresting a high school student on suspicion of marijuana possession is leaving the department. Aspen Public Radio’s Carolyn Sackariason has the details.
Adam Loudon confirmed yesterday he will be leaving the Aspen Police Department. He declined to say where he will be going or when...but says he will remain in law enforcement. He says he’s resigning for personal reasons
Loudon gave his notice 10 days before the Feb. 6 incident when he, along with another officer and a civilian, forcefully took down a 16-year-old boy after he resisted arrest. Loudon approached the student at a bus stop near the high school because he thought he had a joint. Although one was never found, the boy did have marijuana in his backpack. How the arrest was made created community-wide controversy.
The APD didn’t disclose Loudon’s resignation because it has a policy to not publicly discuss employees’ statuses. Aspen Police spokesperson Blair Weyer.
“We didn’t really feel it was pertinent. It didn’t have to do with this specific incident so generally when someone resigns from the police department it’s not something we broadcast in any way so we just stuck with our typical procedures and went about business as normal. It wasn’t anything we were trying to hide. It’s not often that we discuss ….people decide to come and go.”
Louden worked for the Aspen Police Department for seven years.
