More cars towed this Fourth of July

The City of Aspen towed twice as many cars during this year's busy Fourth of July festivities compared to 2014.

Mitch Osur, parking director for Aspen, said cars were towed for being on the parade or bus detour routes Monday.

“Our goal is to tow zero,” he said. “Again last year was a great year when we only towed four and this year, unfortunately we doubled that and towed eight. Which is still considerably less than what it used to be four and five years ago we used to tow between 20 and 30.”

Osur and the parking department put out visible signs warning cars about being towed five days in advance. They also called the vehicle owners to tell them to move their car before getting towed. Osur said about 10 people avoided getting towed because of those warnings.

One reason why it doubled was because of the Boogies Buddy Race’s new starting location near Rio Grande Park. Racers thought they would be finished before vehicles started to get towed. Osur is already planning on making a clear warning on the race registration form next year.
