New Director Named for the Aspen Airport

A former administrator at Denver International Airport is taking the reigns at the Aspen Airport. Pitkin County announced today John Kinney will begin his role as airport director next month.

Kinney brings 28 years of aviation management experience to the job. He was airport director in Scottsdale, Arizona and Long Beach, California. At DIA, he served as Deputy Manager of Aviation. Right now, he works in Los Angeles as the Director of Emergency Management for airports like LAX.

John Kinney will become Airport Director at the Aspen Pitkin County Airport on December 15th.

With potential big dollar issues facing the Aspen Pitkin County Airport, like a possible airfield reconfiguration, Kinney says he’s glad the community’s so involved.

“That’s a community that’s very involved in the decisions at the airport and one where input’s valued and it’s a very public process. You really have to develop and cultivate relationships and make sure what you do compliments the community as well as the safety operation of the airport.”

The County Manager chose Kinney after looking over comments from community members and representatives from businesses like the Chamber and Aspen Skiing Company. Kinney starts work on December 15th.
