Notes from Pyeongchang: Coastal cluster

Ruthie Brown

We ventured down to the Gangneung Coastal Cluster for a day of touring. The city is about 45 minutes from the Mountain Cluster, which is the center for all the skating events. We rented e-bikes and negotiated our way for miles in both directions up and down the coast before going to short track.

This surprisingly beautiful coastline is only 10 minutes from the Olympic venue.

We wandered our way through the streets of Gangneung looking for the best seafood restaurant. There were so many it was hard to choose.

Artists created installations along the beach that symbolize the beauty, power and spiritual blessing of the Olympic Games. Many centered on peace and goodwill. All of these will be burned after a successful Games as an offering.

The Korean women’s speed skating relay team medalled, leading to complete madness and total excitement in the packed house of Koreans. It’s the biggest sport in Korea.
