Occupancy spike in Snowmass reflects shoulder season trend

gosnowmass.com

Snowmass Village continues to creep into the hospitality game, even during the shoulder season.

Bookings this week are a 500 percent increase over this time last year. While Stay Aspen Snowmass president Bill Tomcich said the spike is most likely due to a single conference, the town continues to come into its own and at times even surpasses occupancy rates in Aspen.

“You take a look at a couple of their key summer events … and that has definitely more than moved the needle,” said Tomcich. “I would say it’s pushed the needle to the redline in Snowmass and in both cases caused reverse compression where the Aspen properties have actually seen spillage from Snowmass.”

Final reports show the 2015/16 ski season set a new record for the combined paid occupancy of the resorts. An average of 57.5 percent of hotels were occupied throughout the season. Tomcich said this spring’s extended ski days build “snow equity,” encouraging more off-season bookings in the future.
