John Kerry, the US Secretary of State, spoke about the fight against violent extremism at the Aspen ideas festival yesterday.

Kerry spoke for nearly 45 minutes before speaking with Aspen Institute CEO and president Walter Isaacson. Kerry mentioned many  ways to defeat groups like Boko Haram and ISISincluding more education and ending poverty.

Isaacson questioned Kerry about the United Kingdom’s recent exit from the European Union.

Kerry said the United States has not been good at looking at issues in any other lens than the American one.

“If all we do is interpret problems in other countries through our lens, as Americans, through our felt need, we are neglecting the felt need of all other people who are making policy decisions that have an impact on us,” said Kerry.

Other high profile guests will be speaking at the Ideas Festival during the rest of the week including US attorney general loretta lynch, Mitt Romney and vice president Joe Biden.
