Sochi via Istanbul

EDITOR’S NOTE: We are very excited to share the travels of Simi Hamilton’s family to the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi, Russia. Over the next few weeks we’ll be sharing dispatches from Ruthie Brown and family as they give you a first-hand, “behind-the-scenes” look at the Olympics.

Istanbul: There is no easy way to get to Sochi, so Istanbul was our best option.  Flights only go in every other day, (really) so we’ll take the 9:00pm flight out tomorrow night. One long day from Aspen and we find ourselves on the shores of the Bosphorus Straight for the night. After a ferry ride, and tour of the city, we have been wined and dined at Al’s college professor’s exquisite Sumerian Waterfront Hotel. Truly beautiful.

Beneath palm trees and Palmira blooming, we’re entertained by the boat traffic traveling the channel under lighted bridges.

Between the jellyfish and the ferries, Jenny and James were tempted to try for an evening swim but are thinking better of it.

There is little discussion of the Winter Olympics that are happening not far away.

Tomorrow, a tour of old town, and the mosques, we’ll see if we can blend in with the 16 million people of Istanbul.
