Structure fire at reclaimed wood company in Carbondale

Carbondale & Rural Fire Protection District

The Carbondale and Rural Fire Protection District put out a structure fire in Carbondale today [Tuesday, September 29th]. The District says it took almost an hour to distinguish a dangerous blaze on the north side of town at Distinguished Boards and Beams. The company reclaims barnwood and lumber.

Deputy Chief Rob Goodwin said Tuesday afternoon that a ladder truck was essential to responding to the fire, which was in a 25 foot tall unit of the company, where dust is collected. “I’m unsure of the actual cause,” says Goodwin. “There was some work being done on it at the time. So we’ll investigate that and try to find out exactly what caused it.” Dust collection units can be especially susceptible to fire, and Goodwin says safety measures in place helped contain the fire until firefighters could arrive.

The District received the fire alert around 12:30pm, and declared the blaze out around 1:30pm. Firefighters will spread out the sawdust and take other measures in the coming hours to make sure the fire is completely distinguished. It’s not clear how many employees were on site at the time of the fire.
