“Let It Snow!”

The Roaring Fork Valley is getting a generous helping of white gold heading into a busy

holiday stretch. Wintry weather and new snow have arrived just in time for one of the busiest tourism times of the year. Snow starting this weekend is projected to continue and helped with the Aspen Skiing Company opening more terrain on Saturday at all four resorts.

Wildlife Signs Not Working

The Colorado Department of Transportation will be taking down wildlife zone signs across the state. That’s because a review of the program shows it doesn’t do a good enough job making drivers slow down for deer, elk, and other animals. The agency was directed to identify the zones and post reduced speed or fines with the goal being to cut down on accidents. That was in 2012, as required by state legislation sponsored by former Senator Gail Schwartz and former State Representative Kathleen Curry. The bill required CDOT to review results, which were recently released. It’s not clear how the new move by CDOT will affect a wildlife zone identified between Carbondale and Aspen.

Anti-Fracking Scientist Theo Colborn Dies

One of the most polarizing members of the anti-fracking community has passed away. Scientist Theo Colborn was known for her pioneering work in understanding chemicals that can interrupt hormones. Colborn had focused her more recent research on the effects of oil and gas drilling. David Ludlam is Executive Director of the West Slope Colorado Oil and Gas Association.

“She embodied the power and values of democracy. I think she strengthened our public discourse and she put a spotlight on the value of a public debate, and disagreements at vehicles for making the the world a better place.”

Colborn died of several health problems in Paonia where she lived and had established a nonprofit called the Endocrine Disruption Exchange.

Man Charged with Silt Murder

A man has been arrested and charged with second degree murder in Silt. The Garfield County Sheriff’s office received a call late last week about an unattended death. After investigation, the Sheriff’s office determined it was suspicious and executed a search warrant, which led to the arrest of a 27 year old man between Silt and New Castle. He is now charged with killing his father. Garfield County says the investigation is ongoing.

CDOT Reviewing Glenwood Bridge Comments

Employees with the Colorado Department of Transportation are going through more than seventy pages of comments from the City of Glenwood Springs. They’re about the Environmental Assessment for a new Grand Avenue Bridge in the center of Glenwood. The comments raise questions about whether certain parts of the bridge will be done to the City’s preference. CDOT’s Joe Elsen is leading the project. He says CDOT appreciates the City of Glenwood Springs being a cooperating agency and is confident that close relationship will help iron out any wrinkles. He believes doing the assessment before the final design is done has caused some of the questions. The comment period wraps up at the end of the month.
