Jon Anderson

When Jon Anderson and some of his fellow Brits formed Yes some 45 years ago, they helped launch the genre of music that would become known as progressive rock. King Crimson, Genesis, Emerson, Lake and Palmer, Rush, and others would soon follow, and all of these bands helped raise the level of musicianship in rock across the board. Yes went on to sell tens of millions of records—elaborate works filled with Anderson’s epic lyrical tales of mysterious worlds and forces, all backed by complex yet often melodic arrangements that the rock world had never before experienced. From 1969 to 1979 Yes released an incredible string of 11 albums, and Anderson fronted the band until 2008.

As a solo artist, Anderson has found the time and energy to release 13 albums over the years. Jon’s solo music is quieter and more spiritual than his work with Yes but no less powerful in its own way. He’ll be playing plenty of both at the Wheeler Opera House on Friday night.

Karl Denson's Tiny Universe

Ken Denson
Daniel Shaw

For nearly three decades, legendary saxophonist Karl Denson has been getting crowds around the world out on the dance floor.  Approaching iconic status, Denson has moved bodies and minds dating back to his earliest years with Lenny Kravitz‘s band through his ongoing tenure as a founding member of seminal boogaloo revivalists The Greyboy Allstars and his current roll as a member of San Diego dub rockers Slightly Stoopid.  Nowhere, however, is this more apparent than with his band, Karl Denson’s Tiny Universe.  Touring relentlessly for the past 15 years and leaving a massive audience in his wake, fans know that when KDTU is in town a dance party will ensue.

In Winter 2014, Karl and his band are back on the road for a 20-date plus tour that hits both coasts, highlighted by a three-night stand at Brooklyn Bowl, the Jungle Jam festival in Costa Rica and a co-bill with moe. in York, PA. The run is in support of a brand latest studio album, New Ammo. A relentless 13-track collection, it’s Denson’s debut release on Slightly Stoopid’s record label, Stoopid Records. Alongside Denson originals like the title track and “Everybody Knows That,” which have become fan favorites from his live sets, KDTU offers up searing versions of “Seven Nation Army” by The White Stripes, “Hang Me Up To Dry” by Cold War Kids and “Sure Shot” by The Beastie Boys. The first single “My Baby,” features Nicki Bluhm on vocals.

In Denson’s own words: “We’ve finally figured out how to capture in the studio what the Tiny Universe does live. We move around a lot musically, but this record reflects who we are as a band and where we’re headed with our music.”
