  The United Methodist Church is in a heated internal debate over the issue of gay marriage.  At the center of this conflict is the Methodist Book Of Discipline which guides the denomination’s practices and beliefs.

“I fear that this will lead to a splintering or a split of the church before it gets changed in the actual discipline.”

Rev. Frank Schaefer is at the center of this debate.  He spoke in Aspen on Friday (3-21-2014.) APR's Roger Adams reports.

Same-Sex Couples Share Vows, Love in Civil Union Ceremony

“You are the love of my life… you are my very best friend…”

The vows were simple but very sincere for the three couples who exchanged them at the Limelight Hotel on Saturday morning.

With the approval of Civil Unions in Colorado last spring, this was a first opportunity for some same-sex couples attending Aspen Gay Ski Week to be united under the law with many of the benefits of marriage in front of a supportive community.

The first purchases of recreational marijuana in the Roaring Fork Valley happened this week. People lined up outside the Doctor’s Garden in Carbondale on Wednesday.

While weed becomes legal for adults 21 and older, parents are worried about the effects retail pot might have on teenagers, if it gets into their hands.

A trial in Aspen this week leads to an acquittal for a brew pub in Aspen. The Aspen Brewing Company was cited for noise violations.

Rainbow flags along Aspen’s streets mark Gay Ski Week in Aspen. This year, there are more participants than ever before. And, a group ceremony for civil unions will wrap up festivities.

As ski equipment improves and people are skiing faster, ski resorts are working harder to educate people. Aspen-Snowmass is focusing on ski safety.

Finally, the U-S cross country team is doing well this season. And, some think there’s a chance the team could medal. That hasn’t happened for more than 30 years.

Supreme Court rulings bolster fight for same-sex marriage

On Wednesday (6-26-13), the US Supreme Court struck down a key part of the Defense of Marriage Act... a section that had denied certain federal benefits to same sex couples. The court said that language unconstitutionally discriminated against gays and lesbians. And the decision prompted strong reactions closer to home. Aspen Public Radio’s Rebecca Kruth reports.  

Aspen’s gay community is celebrating after yesterday’s landmark Supreme Court ruling.

Todd Chamberlin is on the board of directors for Aspen Out, a group that provides support and services to gays and lesbians.
