Save Wagner Park

Polo Models...heeyyyy.
Credit Aspen Spin

FULL DISCLAIMER:   I live near Wagner Park in the center of Aspen.  I love Wagner Park.  My dog and I have played ball in Wagner Park almost every day for 11 years.  I believe that open spaces should be cherished and protected.   I want to save Wagner Park.

I have lost complete confidence in our elected officials and the City of Aspen to make well informed and reasonable decisions, especially concerning Wagner Park. They always seem to sell out to the highest bidder.  My Mom & Dad taught me to stick-up for myself, but warned me not to be a complainer.  Every once in a while those two traits come to loggerheads.   I don't want to sound like a complainer....but here's my take.

Poem: Time Machine

Marjorie DeLuca

In the hours between dog and hyena,
they still serve lunch to a certain crowd.

He toddles in with his baggage:
a cane an oxygen tank a man-purse

an ample wife and her sister leading the way.
The machine that was the man is now

rusting, teeth rounded off the gears of time.
They take their time, as time is

all they have left, and with much animus
and screeching of sliding chairs

the women choose a table to our side.
He is not there. I am not here.

I know this man. Years of
running a business,

BLM’s leasing deficiency NEPA and the Thompson Divide

Gas lease in the Wolf Spring Unit of the Thompson Divide. Why would anyone issue a gas lease here? Read the blog to find out, but here’s a hint: the lease isn’t legal.
Credit Will Roush

You might remember back in February when citizens packed the town hall in Carbondale to ask the BLM to let the gas leases in the Thompson Divide* naturally expire at the end of their ten-year terms. Unfortunately, the BLM suspended the leases, allowing the gas companies more time to attempt drilling in the Thompson Divide. On the positive side though the BLM also acknowledged that most of those leases were issued illegally and without proper environmental review or roadless-area protections and so they committed to doing an environmental review of the illegal leases.

Aspen: Out with the old, in with the New.

Idling dozers on call. Just in case we need another hole.

It's off season.  The Ferrari drivers are back home in Houston or Miami or Dallas or NYC or LA or where ever they go.  It's been snowing (see previous post below). Town is quiet. Mornings are cold which makes Wagner Park an excellent place to be... just as the sun peeks over Smuggler Mountain.

I love the smell of POW POW in the morning.

Poem: The Sayings of Twilight Jesus

THE SAYINGS OF TWILIGHT JESUS

Twilight Jesus was looking for a little home to add another notch in time. He was traveling by his soul, deep in his bones, to the wilderness of freedom. "I wait here where the band is tuning up. I love the music; it washes through me, my water. "

He had the spirit of a hummingbird, radiating or reflecting illumination. " But hey, sometimes the only joy that leaps toward me is the joy of grief. I can't get God to talk to me, not knowing has to be good enough. Praise the night, the dreams that safely cradle you."
